The Spanish Society of Epidemiology

The Spanish Society of Epidemiology (Sociedad Española de Epidemiología [SEE], in Spanish) was founded in 1978 and has currently around 1.100 members. SEE is a multidisciplinary scientific society and its members have different graduate backgrounds and skills with a common interest in epidemiology.

The Spanish Society of Epidemiology is composed mainly by physicians, pharmacists, statisticians, graduates in environmental sciences, sociologists, nurses and other health-related professions.

The main objective of the Society is to promote and disseminate the use of epidemiology among the health care system and the society with the final aim of improving public health.

The Society holds annual scientific meetings in Spanish cities where recent research of its membership is presented. Around 600-900 abstracts are accepted in each of these meetings with an average of 600 participants. The 2013 meeting will take place in Granada (September), in collaboration with the Portuguese Society of Epidemiology, the Spanish Society of Public Health and other Latin-American Epidemiology and Public Health Societies.

The Society has different communication tools. Its website (www.seepidemiologia.es) shows its activities, organization, information on the working groups, as well as on future and past scientific meetings. There is a monthly electronic newsletter (SEEnota) with information on epidemiology and public health news, courses, job offers, and brief opinions from members. The Society also maintains a twitter account (https://twitter.com/seepidemiologia) and a facebook group (http://www.facebook.com/pages/Sociedad- Española-de- Epidemiología/180529315382446)

One of the main activities of the Spanish Society of Epidemiology is to promote and support its working groups. Working groups are composed by members with a common interest on a specific topic within epidemiology. The Society has currently 9 working groups on: tobacco, alcohol, social determinants of health, screening, injuries (traffic and other types), public health development, training in epidemiology and public health and, finally, data protection in epidemiological research. Each member can take part on a specific group and SEE provides the groups with funding in order to facilitate meetings and coordination.

The Society has agreements with Spanish institutions, among them the Spanish Ministry of Health and the Consortium for Research on Public Health and Epidemiology (CIBERESP), and is the promoter of the Ibero-American Alliance for Epidemiology and Public Health, currently involving societies from Portugal, Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, and Spain.

The Society has established several awards for its members, with especial attention to young epidemiologists. There is an annual call of a grant for a young researcher for developing a small research project, and two grants, also for young members, to attend the “European Educational Program in Epidemiology” in Florence. The Society also gives one prize and two complementary awards to the best three epidemiological papers published by a member. Finally, at the Annual Meeting, SEE rewards the best communications, with ten prizes for young members and three prizes for senior members.
